Episode 7 – Kelin Law

Episode 7 Matt talks with Kelin Law Mindset Coach, Personal Trainer, Behaviour Change Expert to get to the nuts and bolts of what make her an exceptional human being.

The habit to take on this episode and for the next 12 months is Visualisation.

Visualisation has been used by many of the worlds most successful people to help them create the life of their dreams.

When we visualize goals as complete, it creates a conflict in our subconscious mind between what we are visualizing and what we currently have. Our minds are hard-wired to resolve such conflicts by working to create a current reality that matches the one we have envisioned.

Visualization activates the creative powers of the subconscious mind, motivating it to work harder at creating solutions. You’ll also notice new levels of motivation and find yourself doing things that normally you would avoid, but that will take you closer to success.

Visualization helps boost success by programming the Reticular Activating System (RAS), which serves as a mental filter for the 8 million bits of information that are streaming into our brains at any one time.

The RAS thinks in pictures, not words. Daily visualization feeds the RAS the pictures it needs to start filtering information differently. As a result, your RAS will start to pay attention to anything that might help you achieve your goals – information that it otherwise might ignore.

And this is why visualisation can work, I will obviously have to do the hard work to get to that dream but hey that’s what this podcast is about right?

So I have to make a vision compelling enough that it permiates my being, powerful enough so that I feel as well as see it and real enough so that it is already an active future memory. Not much to ask, but doable.

Habits so far:

Week 1 – Gratitude, I am still thanking the universe or whatever is out there for everything, from dew drops under my feet to positive thoughts

Week 2 – Creative writing, this has been the most difficult task as it doesn’t fit in with my time frames, and just pulling ideas from (see week 5 ideas journal) a creative source. Usually with creative writing for me it just happens. Sadly though my creativity seems to be here.

Week 3 – Giving up my cup of Joe, Coffee is out, still and i can actually say I don’t miss it. I miss the ritual. I don’t miss the jitters and anxiety that it used to induce.

Week 4 – Cold Showers, so far this has taken over my coffee habit as a wake up and welcome to the world.

Week 5 – Ideas Journal, this is with me at all times just in case the flash of inspiration hits.

Week 6 – Removing what doesn’t serve, sage advice and one that has me thinking daily.

Week 7 – Visualisation….

Episode 6 – Andy McKenzie

This episode is a landmark for me. 6 podcast episodes. Never when starting this did I think that with 6 uploaded episodes and another 6 recorded I would be in this position.

This episode is a full length episode on all platforms.

Andy McKenzie was always slated as a guest and one that I have wanted to interview to dial into his habits and routines but also his background.

He was a Paratrooper, he is a father, he’s a strength coach, mentor, author for several publications, he’s a thinker and problem solver.

Our conversation is varied and delves deep into his background, teases some habits, gives you strategies to help with tasks and strength. We also talk about the best 3 pieces of equipment to improve fitness and strength.

The outcome of this conversation is the pay off and I’m really embracing this idea.

Episode 5 – Dan Tyte

Matt talks to Dan Tyte (@dantyte – Twitter) of Working Word PR.  Dan is an Author, Father, Husband and Blond Man with Moustache (as it stands).

Dan is a finisher in everything he does, from reading books, to writing books, to facing deadlines and teaching his daughter to “SQUARK”.  Be like Dan.

The ideas journal is something that I have toyed with, and many ideas have slipped by while dropping off to sleep or when I have been out and about. This does tie in nicely with Mark Tonderai’s habit of writing daily with the task of getting a short story together.

The Commute version

It’s gonna get colder

So the new habit, cold water immersion. The benefits are many:

  1. Increased alertness – How I need this now that coffee has been eliminated.
  2. Stronger immune system – those that have adopted this method have shown less illness due to common cold and flu.
  3. Boosted mood – Cold showers activate the sympathetic nervous system and increase the availability of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine and endorphins, people may be less likely to experience depressive symptoms after a cold shower.
  4. Improved physical recovery post exercise – by reducing inflammation and reduce feelings of fatigue
  5. Improved lymphatic and cardiovascular circulation – it stimulates the heart to work harder shunting blood through the body.

Man I’m in, so in…..First where’s my towel.

Martin Silva

What a guest, we talk eating disorder, the land where we grew up, diet, high frequency training, life post covid, cold water therapy, my lack of coffee and karaoke mics.

My first week without blessed coffee….

I still ❤ you

This has truly been a slog. I mean the ups and downs of losing you as a friend and a crutch has been immense.

I’ve suffered headaches and found clarity. I’ve also discovered how much I relied on you for getting me up in the morning, improving my mood, making me work twice as hard and for longer.

What I have discovered though is that I was fully addicted to you and that’s not good. So I have kicked you.

As the days go by i think of you less. I also remember the good times. When we experimented with different milks (naughty), that time I changed a cortado for a flat white (saucy). You’ll always be there, just not in my hand.

I’ll always cherish our time together, now, I’ll move on.

Episode 3 – Tanya Lynch – The Curveball

In this episode, I talk with Tanya Lynch of Lynchpin Media Wales and Ease Retreats.

One thing you have to know about Tanya is that she has this infectious personality. You speak with her, she lights a match and things get done. I’m not talking arson, but projects, things you’re procrastinating on. She’s like a whirlwind, only there’s never chaos in her wake, just a neat pile of ordered things that you had forgotten you were good at.

During this openly honest and frank conversation, we talk about bankruptcy, success, coffee, Bic Crystal pens, mindfulness, family, projects, order and chaos.

Then, she throws a curveball out of left field that, for a moment makes me sweat.

Episode 2 – Write Daily

Episode 2 – Mark Tonderai

The Creative Episode

This Episode Matt talks to Mark about his creative process. His habits, his life. The things that have shaped him as an individual, as a film director, script writer and all round creative human being.

This was recorded a day before the George Floyd killing and while racial issues have shaped Marks upbringing the subject of race was briefly touched upon and perhaps had the timing been different then the conversation would have been one dominated by this.

Mark was born in London to. Grew up in Zambia during a civil war. Studied architecture. Had dreams of becoming an actor. Became a Radio DJ and now a writer director with credits that include, House at The End Of The Street, Gotham, Locke and Key, Doctor Who, to name but a few.

He imparts wisdom and truth.

Gratitude 5 days in

I’m already starting to feel the benefits. I don’t mean this in a way that is a life changer yet, but, I am more present with things around me. The feelings associated with actions, the simple pleasures and with this a feeling of calm and purpose.

Day 1 felt a little weird, pulling in gratitide and repeating the mantra “I love this life, I love this game, thank you, thank you”. As the day wore on I found myself gently giving thanks for all manner of things, grass under my feet, warm coffee, the ability to write.

Over the last 5 days gratitide has woven it’s way throughout my everyday thoughts without resistance. I find myself unconsciously giving thanks for simple things. Things that seemingly had no connection with my days before making gratitide a personal mantra.

I am grateful to Mark for this, I’m gonna call this a “gift” rather than calling it a habit. I am grateful for this journey of discovery. I am grateful for the ability to adapt and be pliable.

Gratitide.

Gratitude

The One Thing Applied Podcast

With the task of applying one thing from each Expert Guest Matt will embark on 52 weeks of experimentation.

By applying each lesson or piece of advice to Matt’s life will he see meaningful change?  Will his discipline be up to the task?  In conjunction with a blog of the same name you can keep up to date with his progress and meet his guests.

Each podcast is weekly and short form and no longer than 15 minutes in duration, Matt will ask each guest the same three questions.  From each guest Matt will choose one of their answers to apply to his life and make that a habit to try to create meaningful and measurable change.

Question 1:  What one thing would you change in your industry if you could?

Question 2: What piece of life advice would you give to a stranger in need that they can apply daily to their lives?

Question 3: What one thing (Book/Music/Person/Food etc.) brings you instant joy (apart from the obvious (family etc))

Matt will do the hard work then you decide if you’re up to the challenge.
